Not Looking Back in Anger

The Biden Administration wasn't perfect, but it was professional. You want the most benign, bloodless take I can make on it--there you go. We'll be asking ourselves for a long time what else could have been done:

Did they do all they could to prevent Trump 2.0 and bring him to any kind of justice? Did they try hard enough to whip inflation--or at least, leave a bigger impression that's what they were doing? Did they do enough for Ukraine? Could they have done less for Israel and prevent the worst of the suffering in Gaza?

Here's what I do know; hindsight is 20/20. The Biden Administration, like Biden himself, weren't perfect and weren't able to do everything they wanted to do. Biden himself would say, "Don't compare me to the Almighty, compare me to the alternative." You can pick apart what might have been different, in terms of policy, in terms of politics, that might have given us a second Democratic term. You can ask if Biden should have, oh, right about after the midterms, said that he wanted to concentrate on seeing out his term and promoting a new candidate to lead his party.

Bad Vibes

I woke up Wednesday morning in the same world I woke up in the day before. I wasn't sad, not disappointed or even depressed. I checked my pulse to see if I died or something and considered I might be dissociating or something, but that wasn't it, either. I had wanted to be optimistic and keep a positive face and try to believe that who and what Trump was and did mattered leading up to the election, but I didn't have to do that anymore, and honestly, that part was almost a relief.

He got the popular vote, you guys. This wasn't echoes of 2016 for me, this was echoes of 2004, when I was positive that people might realize the Bush was not a really great president in a lot of ways, and look past all that Swift Boat shit and just...

And then some farkakteh "security moms" who were really, really concerned about terrorism got him a second term. Or so the narrative went. But anyway, John Kerry was basically Jane Fonda and....

Whatever.

Anyway, the thing that made me feel like Oh shit wasn't the election--it was an SNL skit featuring Tim Kaine.

Yes She Can

Maybe I just need to stay Kamala and carry Onala.  Maybe I just need to kick it like it's 2008. Maybe there's some sense out there, ready to throw water on the hate. I stay ready in crouch mode, but I want to believe we aren't too late.

But this is all up to us not fate. I started voting from a place called hope. And the American Dream isn't done with any of us yet.

And there are too many things we can never forget.

Ready to turn the page, contain the rage, and never go back.

We are not going back.

Maybe We Will Just Protect Ourselves

I tell this about myself because its true and a little weird, but when I was small, my dad taught me how to hook my fingers up and around an eyeball in its socket--just in case I ever had to. I knew what a xyphoid process was at six years old. I knew where to drive the heel of my hand into a human nose. I was taught that I didn't have the physical strength advantage in life, so I had to have the will. I was taught that you have to walk in awareness. I was taught you watch your drink. I was taught to carry improvised weapons. I was taught to see the world in terms of potential improvised weapons.

I was taught this because some boys never get told what they should never try. Or get told but don't really learn it. (You don't use your knee--it's inexact. You grab them by it. You can squeeze and disrupt a generation of losers. And I never had to do any of that. Not once. Because it's really only a small percentage of men who are actual monsters--most are reasonable and not actual sociopaths. I like men, really. They are interesting enough and some have valuable skills. They care for the people around them and often are smarter than they think they are. It's a confidence issue. When you are told to value muscle over brain, you know.)

Two Messages to Think About:

VS.

I don't know that it gets any starker than that--do I have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, or am I the appendage of male society?

If I was not already a Democrat, this stark comparison would be everything I really needed to know. And it is not a joke--it's a vintage concern in the age of Trump.

I am not going back.  I don't want any woman to feel like she has to accept she has to go back to when we didn't have choices and we didn't have voices.

History is Looking at Us

This isn't about crowd-size or partisanship: do we believe in the arc of history bending towards justice? Do we believe in justice flowing like a river?  Do we believe in this nation, conceived in liberty, shining like a city on a hill? Do we believe in the huddled masses yearning to breathe free? Do we believe in the faith of our pilgrim fathers there was a promised land for them? Do we believe that women matter? Are we here for Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness? And one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all?

Are we the last great hope of the world?

Or do we think this country is a garbage can

Can we have a better movement than what Trump gave us on 1/6/2021?  Like the movement we always did have?

Senator Saltine on Diversity

Poor Jimmy Donuts. The swarthy children of the Empire came home to roost in London Town and assorted Caribbeans are trotting through New Amsterdam! It's a multicultural chaos I tell you!

Reminder:

He knows better. But out loud and in public he's doing a whole different thing:

TWGB: I Deserve a Break Today

Have you ever disassociated so hard you imagined that your parasocial enemy was suddenly some fat senior citizen cosplaying a service job because he wanted desperately to snow people into thinking he wasn't an elitist silver-spoon buttercup but could totally ball behind the french fry thing at a fast food restaurant because he had poor people job FOMO? and ...

What the whole entire fuck?

A Whiff of Musk

For some reason, Elon Musk has decided to ally himself with a white nationalist supposed billionaire US candidate for president, which just seems so out of place for a billionaire silver spoon immigrant from South Africa who thinks he wants to be DD Hariman and probably just wants a Space Force uniform. Is it the fascism? Is it the gimmicky anti-trans scapegoating that tries to amplify a """"problem"""" where no real problem exists?

Is it the desire to keep really lucrative government contracts that might be in doubt because of various levels of fuckery?

Shit I dunno. But instead of thinking about that really hard and popping a blood vessel about what he's done to Twitter, which is where I live, and which I will never call "X: because that is stupid, and undoes a really great cohesive social media theme, with the birdhouses and "Tweets" and other things that all kind of were bird-related, he just made everything dumb and generic and let Nazis post everywhere--I'm thinking about how Musk might be inviting himself to go to prison.

Because he's trying to buy votes and also has manufactured a fake Harris website and has also, too, has some kind of dumb lottery going and his GOTV thing is also not even effective and is really stupid.

No. Really.

TWGB: Fox and the Sour Grapes

What would you call the shade Trump painted himself for this? Terror Cotta? The "enemy within"--which Trump has suggested siccing the military on, includes (Democratic) US Congress members. It probably also includes former GOP US Congress members like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. It likely includes certain former White House personnel--his own former White House. IT includes people like Gen. Mark Milley.  And this "enemies list" is not about people who lied about him--oh no. They did something far worse.

They told the truth.  Trump has never been a fan of transparency--even though we can see through him. Russian interference was real and the Trump campaign had multiple Russian contacts, and the perfect phone call wasn't perfect. It was extortionate

So, how does Fox News, who was sued by Dominion not so long ago and settled for a really amazing amount of money for lying about the 2020 election, in the person of one Brett Baier, presumed serious interviewer, use this information--that Trump considers various prominent American public servants fair game for being rounded up by the military and punished for being the "enemy within"?

He whitewashes it to try and make the Democratic 2024 Presidential candidate look like she's being extra.

No, really.

Here's a Bit of History

This is the first president whose inauguration I can remember. Now, if you know my age, you might think that is improbable, but 1976 was a big year in Philadelphia with the Bicentennial and all. And I guess I imbibed political sensibility a bit from my mom. In 1977 I had a turntable, a Kiss album alongside my Sesame Street records and was a fan of Happy Days and watched some documentary about the 25th anniversary of rock and roll on PBS about a dozen times, it felt like.

I remember the 1970s. I was already me by the time I was a toddler cleaning up shot glasses after parties (the taste of blackberry brandy and the sound of Steppenwolf) and listening to the Midnight Special. when I definitely wasn't supposed to still be awake and turning on the sole tv in the house and was lifting cold pizza out of the fridge. Mom finding me zonked on the floor with the farm report or Chief Halftown on in the morning.

He reminded me of Mr. Rogers then, and that was all right by me. He still does, and I don't have a greater compliment. He cares, and he acts on his sense of caring. It's the best thing you can say anyone ever does.

Sorry, Lying is not a Superpower

Trump is the only candidate in half a century (my lifetime!) who cancelled like a little bitch. The good journalists of 60 Minutes are not Blog-Standard so they don't call him a little bitch. But you know what?

I feel like it was implied.

Let's talk about Trump and lying--he does do that. He calls the press "liars" because they fact-check him and he can't handle the truth because he is, in fact, a little bitch.  He wants people to think he is being persecuted by the lying press so people don't trust the media and only hear what comes out of his lying mouth. It has worked on people situated in the Fox News Mushroom Farm because they are used to being kept in the dark and fed shit. They have been told to sneer at the elite liberal media apparatus and see fact-checking as a dirty trick.

But I just want to direct your attention to something Trump said in a very friendly interview with Hugh Hewitt. Sure, he said a lot that suggested that he thought melanated people coming across our border were more genetically murdery--which is some really wild and racist stuff. But he also implied that Kamala Harris wasn't intelligent because she couldn't tell complicated lies.

Vice-President Harris not lying is somehow a bad thing? Like, lying is good?

Who Are You Going to Listen To?

Well, uh, let's hear it for a fact-check from Frank Luntz, because open-faced lying to struggling people is, my God, why do we have to explain this?  Completely wrong and unnecessarily divisive and totally unhelpful.

And also, what Trump is stunting about right now. He did a little photo-op in Valdosta and lied behind a tiny brick wall someone had to stop everything and make for His Nibs. And he had an emotional support evangelical by his side to sanctify his lying. Who prayed for HIM and his election because of course.

People have died. Some of the survivors have lost everything they had. They have family photo albums and keepsake Bibles and all kinds of records of their life they can't get back. They are going to be homeless for a while. And Trump shows up in his MAGA hat like this was a campaign event. Costing local security. Taking away resources from search and rescue or whatever else for his hot minute criticizing the Biden Administration for--what they already are doing

What they ARE ALREADY DOING

A Serious Woman

There are detractors to this ad. The younger folks did not have Schoolhouse Rock in their early life and it shows. An executive can propose, but it's up to Congress to dispose such acts. So unfortunately, despite what a White House official like the Vice-president might want, they don't get that without congress and the president also being on board. And Republicans--exist. And quite openly block border bills because it's kind of bad for Trump. They blocked a border bill for Trump because he doesn't have a whole hell of a lot else to run on besides his wall gimmick.

If you thought I was going to only say Trump was an unserious man because he is, well, no. The whole GOP is, now, because they are verified useless.

Trump is Going to Take the Money and Run to Venezuela

I guess I know what probably happened here. Trump was going to use the "Venezuelan gangs took over Aurora, Colorado" thing but then his brain got hijacked into the Haitian story.  Which being all about Ohio is obviously a JD Vance joint. But because his few braincells are just playing a massively information-losing game of "Telephone" amongst themselves, he forgot why deporting people to Venezuela wouldn't be correct.

Trump has been referencing Venezuela a lot though. Maybe he thinks he wants to do like Matilda in the old Calypso song. He takes the money and runs to Venezuela. He surely thinks Caracas is nicer than Washington DC. He wants to meet with his friends there. I guess they don't have extradition to the US. Maybe he has his mind set in the Carribean for some reason. Not everywhere has the Pacific Ocean, but the Carribean is quite nice.

They're Eating the Dogs! Debate me!

They are not eating the dogs. Putin is eating Trump's lunch. Kamala Harris is not Joe Biden, and every state has laws against infanticide. Trump's "concepts of a plan" are not a goddamn plan and he looked weak, delusional, unfocused, changed the subject and rambled like a lunatic, and demonstrated why 81 million people voted against him four years ago. Trumps history of racism was discussed. as was his weakness and lack of patriotism.

Vice-President Harris had reasons to smile, to express pity for delusional old Trump mingled with the satisfaction of having a new crotchet of his to seize on with any given response. He was baited on his weakness, on people leaving his rallies, on his former staff having bad things to say about him--

And he rose, or should we say, sank, to each allusion.

He messed up by showing up thinking his act was all he needed. The ABC team did a good job of fact-checking, which Trump fans will no doubt view as putting their thumbs on the scale. I guess my point about that is--why are the facts so stubbornly aligned against what Trump says, though?  That is certainly something you might want to consider!

Maybe Trump is just a pathetic liar.

Just Say "Kamala", This is Taking Forever

Obvious plant Catturd cut right to the bone, here. I mean, seriously, he ate. You can free-associate how the imaginary problem of pets being eaten by people who just want to come somewhere with good-paying jobs and settle down is a "real issue", but the real issue is: are we othering Kamala Harris enough and making her the foreign person who might even eat pets herself?

Sure, it's an obvious form of faked-up concern a la the litter boxes and the on-demand sex change operations in public schools and all that. But what they are also doing is trying to make that about how immigrants and people of color are not like us--and neither is Kamala Harris. It's going from John Eastman-style "Where's the birth certificate?" to "Obama ate a dog."

Maybe she identifies more with the supposed pet-eaters? The ones that don't actually exist? Maybe she identifies with this weirdo who at least has an immigrant parent who kills local animals:

Little Jimmy and the Operation: A Trump Fable

The school nurse can't even give out aspirin*, and now kids are supposed to be getting "a brutal operation" in school? What "brutal operation"? Are they handing out appendectomies? Emergency tracheotomies? Is there a full surgical theater in your son's or daughter's school you need to worry about? (Are they more likely to be slapping on tourniquets in the case of an actual bloody emergency--all too probable.)

Long story short--Little Jimmy is not going to get his Liitler Jimmy whacked off while at school. Teachers are paying for glue sticks and dry erase markers out of pocket and supposedly school districts are doing bottom surgery on your precious wee manlet? You would think Trump of all people would be skeptical about the promise of free vaginas being handed out. And it's not escaping me that he is afraid for little Jimmy, not little Agatha getting a double mastectomy.

This is not happening. This is on the "furry kids using a litter box at school" level of not happening. It's simply nucking futz. It's on the same level of not-happening as the supposed latest term-post-birth abortion. He's now said it more than once, and maybe that means it's going to be a part of stump speeches, now. And it speaks to other fears parents might have: their boys aren't transgender--but just a bit queer. Maybe they are autistic, artistic, kind, sensitive, don't do sports, respect women, aren't about to grow up and ride a Lingam-1500 male-insecurity wagon with truck nuts and a Trump flag to their he-man signifying maleness job. Maybe they just have to also compete with girls who are smart as fuck and might be better at them in things.

They Mean She Sounds Black

OK, in the spirit of "same old tired playbook" I could refrain from addressing this stupidity, but I won't because just let me do this white privilege thing for a minute. I strained to hear a hint of a southern accent. It isn't that. I feel like the people who are saying this aren't sure what a southern accent sounds like (and there are multiple southern accents--Texas doesn't sound like Georgia, and neither sounds exactly like Florida). I have a Philadelphia accent. I distinctly don't sound southern, but there are traces of the south in the mouths of some of the people where I live--Black people.

This is because of the great migration. Racist whites with memories of the 1950s and 1960s can tell you they think Black people were literally invited up here. Practically trucked in. That's not exactly how it went. But it does explain in part White Flight to the Philadelphia suburbs. And how some Whites feel about the integrated public schools I attended where I noticed the difference in how some of my peers spoke versus how I did.

But not that much. Your working-class White is just as likely to drop a double negative, say "ain't" out loud where people can hear, or employ "wrong" verb tenses for emphasis--as in "She don't know what she's doing" has a different mouth feel and intentionality from "She doesn't know, etc."

Now, my folks set me down in front of PBS as a kid and I can speak the Queen's English if I mean to with a credible Mid-Atlantic accent, even.   I speak customer service for my job--proper nearly accent-free and grammatically correct.  It is not how I speak at home. This is called code-switching. And I am not bothered about what that says about my authenticity--so how could I be fucked up about what it says about Kamala Harris' authenticity if she sounds a little different to different audiences--I do it myself. If you read my blog, you know Yiddish and Italian slang creeps in. It would! I have dimensions and have sat at different tables.

So I understand what they mean by this particular "trifling", and I think I want to call it racist-adjacent. It isn't said totally out loud, and they do want to compare it to Hillary Clinton--but I get what they are trying to say about who she is. And it's bullshit. She is being herself with the people she's being with. This is what diversity looks like. People swim in many waters. They use different strokes.

Where Were Your Candidates on Labor Day?

Mine was working.

I don't know where Trump was, but wherever JD Vance was, he was Tweeting unadvisedly

This man may have worked a service position once according to his book (and probably does not have it still on his resume), but he has demonstrated no feeling for working people. He's used to no-show jobs. Just like he doesn't show up to vote for working people.

TWGB: It's Raining Shoes!

It certainly has been a minute, hasn't it? So, what brings me out of self-imposed blogging exile, if not something very relevant to my...
