He's a Creep. He's a Weirdo.

What the hell is he doing here? (Don. Jr. and Eric wanted dad to pick him.) He doesn't belong here. (But there's Silicon Valley money and Project 2025 backers behind him, so we will likely be seeing him for at least a minute more.)

Yeah, JD may not be a sofaphile and maybe he isn't into dolphin porn, but he is a really weird guy. From a kind of racist take on stopping women from traveling to get an abortion, to being on board with tracking women's menstrual cycles--literally policing their bodies! to defending his unfortunate and weird "cat lady" comments in a way that is still unfortunate and weird, while taking a swipe at Jennifer Aniston, he's really shaping up to be one of the worst running mate choices imaginable.

He isn't really helping the Republican ticket, but it's sort of worse than that. He could be an active drag. In the voting sense--not in the George Santos sense. Except he has changed his names as many times as George Santos, so there's that.

The Harris campaign has definitely noticed:

He has made himself too easy to define by association as well as what has come out of his own face. Take writing the forward to Kevin Roberts' latest book or endorsing Jack Posobiec's. (Another nasty piece of work.)

The guy just throws up some really dark, dystopian energy, and while it's fun pointing out that he is a joyless busybody who seems to be trying to project that "no, it's the other people who are joyless busybodies who want to brainwash your kids" or whatever--he seems to be dead serious about at least some of it. And I really wouldn't want to see him in any higher office to find out.

Also--thinking on the cat lady thing a little more, and how Vance seems to think the people with kids are just better citizens--is that even so? I mean, we've all known parents who are flipping jackasses to their kids. Teen moms who leave their kids to whatever relative will take them, baby daddies who just flit from hook-up to hook up and barely want to pay for their kids, let alone know them. Parents who disown their kids for being different, especially for being queer. Parents who emotionally wreck their kids, leaving them searching for meaning and wondering why someone even bothered to have them.

But there's worse. Parents who abuse their kids, starve their kids, traffic their kids.

There's nothing about Vance's worldview that seems like he thought it through. Maybe the idea just...sounded good to him? Maybe he has these terrible, unfortunate views because he's grasping for identity? I don't want to "put him on the couch" as it were. I just would like him to seek meaning and identity outside of politics--and to mind his own little busybody business.

I'm starting to think the repubs are throwing this. There's no other way out ...

I don't know that they are throwing it--I think the people running the party are so out of touch they have no idea that they sound full-on loco anymore.

I gather that, thanks to Vance, “couch porn” is now a thing.
