I think it was an act of moral courage for Senator Schumer to express criticism of Israel PM Netanyahu and concern for the lives of innocent Palestinians. Leaving aside whether he was the best person to make this message because of his own Jewishness and long-standing support of Israel, that there needed to be daylight between what the United States supports and what Netanyahu's government is carrying out was a necessity, because OUR US government must be accountable. The ongoing suffering of people who had no choice in the horrific and malicious actions of 10/7 is inhumane. The idea of so much suffering on both sides without a clear path to reconciliation, and ultimately peace, feels unthinkable.
There have been protests in Israel that suggest that many people do not feel like Netanyahu has done everything he can to get the hostages home and end the current war. Although Schumer called for elections what he did not do is imply who should win them--rather, he indicated that a referendum on the desires of the people in our democratic ally would settle what their vision is for the future of the Israeli state--without leaving it in the hands of someone who had done everything he could to prevent a two-state solution.
Okay, in a backhanded way it was about the current PM and his possible manipulation of this war to his own political ends with a suggestion that he was not the man we could work with going forward. Anyone could see that. But if the man was using continued suffering to his own ends--is that something the US could ignore?
The right of the state of Israel to exist and be a secure homeland for Jewish people who choose to live there is defensible. The denial of Palestinian people the right to dwell in their ancestral place where they are right now is a humanitarian disaster. Here both of these people are. The two-state solution at least avoids annihilation and allows people to just be in a place they can call home--under their fig tree and vine, as it were.
A backlash is to be expected. This is the most show of disapprobation towards the actions of the Israeli government I think the US has made. But the alternative, the certain unnecessary deaths of a generation of Palestinians in Gaza to accomplish the end of radical terrorism--which is not merely uncertain but unlikely, is unconscionable. The US policy is not, going forward, washing our hands to seal the fate of the state of Israel, but to present a lasting option for endurance for them and for a free Palestine.
The existence of both is not impossible. We must believe in a better world, negotiation, and the power of good faith. What else is there?
But the sound of mothers, weeping for their children, for they are no more?

Fortunately, the use of Hamas as an excuse to do nothing but support Israel has finally been closed down.
And IMMEDIATELY, Mitch McConnell and Mike Johnson attacked him as Anti-Semtic. And our Corporate Media reports this as though those two assholes have any credibility on Israel or any topic.
No one in Congress has more gravitas on Israel than New York Senator Chuck Schumer.
And this is why if President Biden had done as the erstwhile Left wanted him to do from Day 1 and denounce Israel and Benjamin Netanyahu not only would Republicans have called him a. Jew-Hating Nazi, the Left would have agreed and sided with Republicans (AS THEY ALWAYS DO) and the "Liberal" Media would have said whelp that's it Joe's not only too OLD but he's got no support her and no friend in Israel time to sandbag him.
amazeballs. that motherfucker netanyahu was invited to address the republican retreat THIS YEAR! the fascists called him in to shiv obama in '15. once again, IOKIYAR. so much for politics stopping at the water's edge and meddling in another country's internal affairs.
those fucking fascists have really lost ALL grounds to criticize ANYONE for pretty much ANY behavior. at this fucking point they're GUARANTEED to be engaging in that behavior as they lob high-yield, intercontinental, ballistic opprobrium of it in our direction.

You CANNOT underestimate the significance of CHUCK SCHUMER going after Israel. It's long overdue. Bibi is a fucking idiot, and this is his achievement.
