This reminds me a bit of Trump's response to the first hate crime that could be attributed to his rhetoric: when asked about the brothers who had assaulted a homeless man, he said of his followers, "They are passionate."
It struck me then that this was a grim foretaste of what was to come of his type of language and that it should be a clue that his fellow Republicans should use the opportunity to take an off-ramp. Either side with Trump and that language, or mirror it and reap the whirlwind. The man doesn't care about American values or American exceptionalism--he sees the passion of angry, riled up people, his people, with pleasure. He responded to the terrorism at Charlottesville the same way.
He's not difficult to understand. What he is has been obvious. And appallingly, unforgivably, there are people who have also seen perfectly well what he is, but decided to ride that tiger anyway. It should take them to hell.
