So, when we went from the original thirteen to fifty states, what the hell would Mitch McConnell call that? (Maybe we've always been socialists?!) But I think McConnell clearly sees a distinction from how the United States expanded its map via manifest destiny to what statehood for Puerto Rico and D.C. entails, and it's all of a piece with the GOP's love of gerrymandering and voter ID laws.
But, of course, socialism is just a "dirty word" to sling around meaning "a thing Democrats would like".

To McConnell, "socialism" is anything that costs his big donors money. Or anything on which his donors fail to make money.
