It seems like one should note the passing of Margaret Thatcher on a political blog, but I admit I don't have much direct experience of her politics and that, for me, she mostly existed in references as a shady harridan flitting through the type of music I listened to or as kind of a UK Reagan counterpart. Not especially flattering. I can bear a sort of respect for a woman exhibiting power and competence on the world stage and in the political imagination, but feh. I've always been of the opinion that it isn't just having power, but how it's used, that counts, and what I've seen and read leads me to view her more as a champion of
inequality than
of freedom. But I haven't much more to say about that.

Mrs. Thatcher transformed the character of British politics by heading a democratically elected Parliamentary government that permitted financial planners to carve up the public domain with popular consent.
Like her actor contemporary Ronald Reagan, she narrated an appealing cover story that promised to help the economy recover. The reality, of course, was to raise Britain’s cost of living and doing business.
But this zero-sum game turned the economy’s loss into a vast windfall for the Conservative Party’s constituency in Britain’s banking sector.
Obama is continuing in the same fashion.
