Usually, a campaign that is behind in the polling would want another shot at a debate to show credibility and offer a comparison. And his campaign is apparently financially pinched, so, free publicity, right?
But this is TrumpWorld, and Trump blew the COVID-19 response so badly he is literally bad-mouthing Dr. Fauci at every turn because he can't take the blame (even though people generally trust Fauci, not Trump) that he'd rather not address it. And unless he can interrupt and menace, he doesn't have much else in the way of rhetorical flourishes.
(There's also a real risk at this point that Trump stoops to a self-damaging low blow. I have some good ideas how low because he has been telegraphing them.) So Trump bashes the moderator ahead of time, and now the campaign produces this letter.
So this sounds to me for all the world like "If we can't get our way, we'll take our ball and leave."
(And save some face.)
And like, "Ok, bye, then."
UPDATE: And how do I know this for sure? And then it occurred to me, yeah. Trump wants to debate Joe Biden exclusively on foreign policy. That would be greeaaaaaatttt for him.
