"Iran appears to be standing down which is a good thing for all parties concerned."— ABC News (@ABC) January 8, 2020
Pres. Trump addressed the nation hours after Iranian airstrikes, threatening additional "punishing" sanctions on Iran—but not immediate military retaliation. https://t.co/7ySmyuzhI9 pic.twitter.com/0sbB6Rzwit
I think it's a good thing that the attacks from Iran last night seemed to have been sending a message of retaliation, not escalation, and that, in their wake, President Trump is discussion sanctions, not a military response. It is, I think, sad that Trump can not seem to make his way through this speech without needing to spitefully mention the previous administration, especially when his comments are premised in part on a lie, and an inability to appreciate that relations with Iran worsened when he scrapped the JCPOA.
He did look rather the worse for wear (both "Adderall" and "TelePrompTer" were trending on Twitter), but I'm not saying anything about that. I do think it was better that he chose to say whatever he was going to say in the cold light of day rather than last night before any proper assessment had been made about Iran actions.
But he gets no credit from me just because things could have been worse and are not. They also could have been better.
