I note with a little fascination that despite the warm reception Dinesh D'Souza's latest MAGA D'opus received at Mar-A-Lago, the auteur has a complaint about being blown off by Newsmax and, surprisingly, by Tucker Carlson. I have a theory about this--want to hear it? Here's how it goes:
It's really fucking embarrassing and they don't want their asses sued off, the end.
I'm no great legal mind, here, but OAN just had to run a spot disavowing claims of voter fraud shenanigans as part of a settlement after being sued by two election workers they smeared to hell and back. Fox News and several other outlets of mass disinformation are also being sued by Dominion and Smartmatic.
D'Souza's little movie now has the MAGAs wondering why none of the "mules" have been arrested. It's because the claims are weak, but that doesn't mean the true believers won't start looking for folks to harass over it. After all, we've got people who have literally gotten worked up over the Venezuelan software, the Italian satellites, the German servers, the Chinese thermostats, the Chinese ballots (with bamboo in the fibers, even!), and the South Korean jet planes. Of course, there are people who will believe this--they want to believe.
But it doesn't make it true, it just makes it dangerous and dumb. So, my guess it that maybe these outlets are just a little shy about adding another dangerous and dumb thing to their plates. Not because they care about people getting harassed or spreading misinformation, O MY HECK NO. But this movie may cause innocent private citizens to be identified as possible mules and targeted for harm--and that's a lot of lawsuit.
I'm just saying. It's a possibility.

Good theory!
Applause for the use of "auteur", too.
