Climate Sunday: If It's Winter in the US, Global Warming is A Lie

I've been meaning to get back to doing my Climate Sunday posts, and what better time than when most of the US is in a grips of a fearsome Arctic blast? As The Donald's tweet above shows--this clearly means Global Warming is O-V-E-R, right?

Well, erm, wrong, as Chris Mooney explains at Mother Jones. Aussies of my aquaintance reassure me that their summer is as perfectly awful as, well, last summer, and global temperature for 2013 was in the top five warmest years, with 2014 expected to be pretty competitive.

Also, there was some news this week out of Antarctica, where a research ship had become trapped in the ice necessitating several rescue attempts and somehow, lots of ice in Antarctica also proves global warming is not real--except, no, it doesn't. Just like anywhere else, Antarctica has weather, which is something different from climate, just like "It's raining right now" doesn't mean it's always raining. The reasons for any individual phenomenon may be various and complex--but don't necessarily reflect on the larger picture. Also, Arctic sea ice has continued to decline. Deniers might want to explain the significance of that one, hm?
