Rep. John Fleming opposes the Democratic atheist view.

Or so he said while appearing with that diaper dandy, David Vitter. Which so reminds me of Liddy Dole's "Godless" ad. If you can't talk yourself up, talk your opponent down. And if push really comes to shove, call them an atheist.

So, here's what TPM reports as being said:

We are either going to go down the socialist road and become like western Europe and create, I guess really a godless society, an atheist society. Or we're going to continue down the other pathway where we believe in freedom of speech, individual liberties and that we remain a Christian nation. So we're going to have to win that battle, we're going to have to solve that argument before we can once again reach across and work together on things.

Wow, so much stupid in that statement to unpack.

So here we go: freedom of speech and individual liberties aren't in any way necessarily infringed by a secular government. And actually, if we want to look at the whole First Amendment, we have, RIGHT THERE, freedom of religion, because the US government explicitly does not endorse any particular establishment of religion. Meaning we are by no means a Christian nation. And really never were. Also, socialism actually doesn't have anything to do with our "freedoms". It has more to do with economics. A society could technically be orthodox Christian in practice and be communist in economics. Or a society could be atheistic and as capitalistic as Mammon. And neither combination would have anything to do with its relative "freedom"--that would be dependent upon the laws of the land in question.

And as an afterthought:

Why do some of these Christians have such an issue with "rendering unto Caesar", anyway?
