Via The Advocate--Archbishop Calls Children "Spontaneously Homosexual"
Brazilian Archbishop Dadeus Grings came under fire Wednesday for saying children are "spontaneously homosexual" and society at large is pedophilic, after allegedly making the comments to a reporter after a press conference.
"We know that the adolescent is spontaneously homosexual," Grings said. "Boys play with boys, girls play with girls. If there is no proper guidance, this sticks. The question is — how are we going to educate our children to use a sexuality that is human and suitable?"
Um. Wow. There is not anything right in what he's saying. There is a period of time in the "tween" years where children do seem to self-segregate along gender lines generally in that weird period where boys think girls have cooties and girls form packs. Like wolves. But that's really general, and might itself be social. But once puberty is underway, that self-segregating doesn't stick, and no one "has to be taught". In fact, as a little straight girl with Catholic boyfriends I rather thought much of the "teaching" the Church was involved in was telling teens to keep their hands off each other! (Not that this "stuck", either.)
(Also--"human and suitable"? "Human"? Seriously?)
But the real weird line is this:
"Society today is [pedophilic], that is the problem. So, people easily fall into it. And the fact it is denounced is a good sign," he said in the newspaper, according to the Associated Press.
Whose society is pedophilic, exactly? And if it truly were, where are the denouncements coming from? And since it doesn't really seem like too many people are fiddling about with kids, how is it all that easy to fall into?
Wow. A sparkling, shining example of why religious people sometimes aren't really the best authorities on morality or how to live.
