That Answers That Question

I had wondered in the previous post about the following:

Also, and this is important: the way Kennedy speaks about eliminating exposure to a "cause" of autism makes me very concerned about what he thinks about autistic people, that the people expressing aspects of the autism spectrum are broken or less-than.

Well as to that, say no more:

Visiting the FDA on Friday, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had several “off -the-cuff” remarks which stunned many staffers present, according to a POLITICO report.

            ****

The most insulting comment, however, came when he used an ableist slur when discussing mental health.

“Because of my family’s commitment to these issues, I spent 200 hours ... with the r------d when I was in high school,” Kennedy said at one point. “So I was seeing people with intellectual disabilities all the time. I never saw anybody with autism.”

Okay, scratch that, because maybe I do have a bit more to say about that.

RFK, Jr. Promises What Science Can't

You might have to read the title of the blog post more than once--it isn't complimenting Kennedy on what he claims will happen in a matter of months, but rather, if he gets an "answer' in that time, it won't be about the science. Mostly because everything he's saying is wrong.

We don't have an autism epidemic; we have a diagnosis epidemic. We don't lack for research. There are multiple genes and epigenetic factors involved. You can't "eliminate" all potential exposures related to something that has multiple causes.

Also, and this is important: the way Kennedy speaks about eliminating exposure to a "cause" of autism makes me very concerned about what he thinks about autistic people, that the people expressing aspects of the autism spectrum are broken or less-then.

The Dangerous Playground

I just want you to do a thought experiment with me for a little bit. You are a park administrator. The town council has allocated certain funds to build a playground in the park you administrate. They want, specifically, a jungle gym, slide, and swing set--the sorts of things that would be attractive and fun for children. There is already a designated space and it has been partially paved. There is no compelling reason not to use the allocated funds to build the jungle gym, slide and swing set.

However, you don't especially love the idea of the playground itself on general principles and are trying to save park administration money because you have as yet to be determined reasons and saving money looks great on your personal resume.

So you hire three, let's call them-- "Stooges". They say they are builders, and that's good enough for you, because they seem bright enough. And they use some pre-made kits to get the ball rolling and build something that looks like the promised picture--but there are lots of unused parts. They have no idea how those go together, and assume they are just extras and cart them off.

They are, actually, reinforcing beams, retaining straps, cement screws--parts intended to ensure the whole apparatus doesn't cave in under the weight of child bodies, fall over in a stiff breeze, or send children flying. But these budget builder fly-by-nights had no idea how anything worked, and now, we have kids approaching a rickety playground of doom.

Kiddie carnage awaits.

TWGB: Terminal Main Character Syndrome

A young DOGE staffer has left because the Wall Street Journal had some questions, as in, "Is this racist account you? " I'm sure Elon Musk is shocked--shocked! That there are little racist pishers in his Kekistanian domain.  Wow. So exotic and not-vetted

What's really funny about this is, when our actual confirmed Secretary of State, former US Senator and former presidential candidate Marco Rubio, made a big statement about not going to the G20 in Johannesburg:

I wanted to ask the Real President (tm) Elon Musk if this was the result of his bitch titties being in a wringer over the concept of the US confronting the Woke Mind Virus on what used to be his terf. I mean, "turf".

Of course, I do. I was just confused because the US is obviously in a transitional period and our pronouns stopped being US and seem to be he/huh! regarding Astroboy.

He's not the president that MAGA voted for, but he's what they got. Up in our databases, taking our numbers, deciding the size of the government HE thinks we deserve. Regardless of what any vetting into him might show, or what his conflicts of interest might be.

No, We Most Definitely are NOT

This country is not ready for a debate on vaccines. Vaccines are not a debate topic. This is like debating whether the earth is round. They aren't political. They aren't something any jackaloon with a big old opinion should have a dopey say-so about. They are being made political by chiclet-heads.

Wait. I take that back. That's needlessly insulting to gum.

RFK. Jr. is working with a lawyer who petitioned to "revoke approval of the polio vaccine."

The polio vaccine. When I was growing up, if there was a medical Mount Rushmore, Jonas Salk would've been on it. It's safe. It virtually eradicated a genuinely terrifying disease.

Facts STILL Don't Care About Your Feelings

I bet there are a lot of small-business people who feel like following Trump makes them more like big-business people. His policies are really going to fuck them up. And the effects of his "promises" are already coming to fruition. Their businesses don't have reserve capital enough to float them through additional costs that they can't calculate yet. I am not sure why so many people didn't check out what they were in for, but I'm still dealing with the thing I completely underrated--

There are a lot of people who simply don't know shit. Like:

Mad Hatters, Cinnabar and B-Movies

Ten Bears' recent post just released a flood of information-associations for me, and in typical aneurotypical fashion, I'm treating you all to an infodump. I share because I love.

There's good reason to think mercury could be a cause of endemic psychological dysfunction--methyl mercury was the sad story behind the character of the "Mad Hatter" in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Mercury poisoning can cause depression, anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain and personality changes, and there's good reason to believe that people turn to substance abuse to self-medicate. It would not surprise me that low level organic mercury poisoning could result in a pattern of alcoholism and other substance use. After all, we know very well that there is a link between lead exposure and criminal activity and substance abuse. And we know that as exposure to lead has gone down, so has crime.

I think I first became aware that mercury was a problem because of cinnabar--I collect jewelry and the idea that certain jewelry could be mildly toxic fascinated me. It also reminded me of the deadliness of lead used in ancient cosmetics--and it bothered me that mercury poisoning is associated with fish because I eat rather a lot of it--tinned fish is a protein go-to when you work long hours and don't have a lot of time for cooking. And I adore sushi.

MTG is Showing her Panties Again

Behold, Marjorie Taylor Greene,
conspiracy theorist, drama queen,
lacking attention and growing bored
decided SHE WOULD NOT BE IGNORED!

So, she decided to pick some bones
(using crap she got from Alex Jones)
with Dr. Fauci--it wasn't pretty.
her duel of wits unarmed, a pity!

She subjects herself to ridicule
with a grasp of facts so miniscule
that in a feckless hunt for witches
she revealed herself the worst of--

people to have ever been in congress!

She made the hearing a total farce
because she had to show her arse,
all to earn her soggy potato chip.

Magnets-How Do They Work?

Look, just take a kitchen magnet and get it wet.  It will still work. I don't know what he thinks will happen.  I don't know where this thing came from. Anyway, he thinks gas sells for $8 a gallon. He has said people need to show their ID to buy groceries. He doesn't know how things work, which is why he also says things like he was going to sell US oil and gas to Europe to pay the national debt.  He has a real problem with windmills. He just kind of thinks everyone else also does not know how things work and will also think what he is saying is great and smart.

He still seems to not know how bills become laws or what branch of government does what or how he got indicted four times. It's very concerning.

Judge Chutkan and Jack Smith were recently swatted. It's really hard for me to reconcile going out of one's way to terrorize people to try and get one's favored candidate for office clear of a lot of very serious charges with that person also being a transparent idiot.

PSA: You Are Not a Cat

There is a phenomenon that has been well-documented on the internet, the place where people document things happening to cats: when you place a cucumber behind an unsuspecting cat, it will lose its ever-loving little furry shit. Multiple gifs and YouTube videos of this phenomenon exist. Cat + cucumber= YIPES!

For most people (not Mike Johnson or Ken Hamm or assorted creationists) this can be explained by evolution. Cats only have so much bandwidth in their little brains and some snakes are DANGEROUS. They aren't hardwired to leisurely inspect long green things to figure out whether they are snakes or inoffensive vegetables. They are hardwired to get away from the weird thing sort of shaped like a snake that seems to have just slithered up to them.

That's cats. They don't do a whole lot of thinking. If you've ever pulled one out of blinds, or a Christmas tree, or unhooked their claws from your pants leg, you are aware that despite their occasional grace and agility, they can be weird little clowny guys. They literally bite the hand that feeds them. They try to fit their whole behinds in a Kleenex box. They evolved to be a better mousetrap, not to build one.

There is a phenomenon that has been documented on the internet, and all of recorded history, of human beings making a categorical error of confusing identities with morality. Individual humans make decisions and take actions that may be morally sound or not. Whole groups of people do not become suspect because of the individual behaviors of other people based on their identities: not their ethnicity, their nationality, their religion, their gender-identification, their sexuality, their political affiliation (for the most part) or what hand they use to eat with. (Is that last thing still a thing?)

The Former Guy is Nuts

He thinks the Biden Administration is a continuation of the Obama Administration and is lying on the wall he never really built. TBH, he's all the way nuts:

None of this is new. He's been the guy who has been talking about windmill cancer and buying Greenland and stuff like that.  The problem is, no one ever seems to want to call the weird as fuck things he says actually "crazy" even though they objectively are. It's like Trump has been given a safe space, available to celebrities, to be eccentric or stupid as hell, and the media doesn't want to report that thing. The Trump is not just a criminal fascist thing, a rapist and a racist thing. They don't want to report on the fact that he's dumb as hell. Windmill cancer. Windmills killing whales. Electric cars only travelling for twenty minutes. People drinking bleach to stop Covid

The weirdo projects his crimes on others, he suggests other people should commit acts of vengeance for him, he wants impeachment of his political "enemy" and a government shutdown because he thinks it will help him (it would not have because federal prosecutions are funded differently).

He has been an unstable not-genius for a long while. His supporters are by now, just absolutely shithouse rats. How are you supporting the guy who says any of the things this one says?

We are not saying this enough. Trump is not stable, not a genius, not sane. He's not just a crook, he's bent.  He' s actually stupid, even though the media has been schooled to not call him stupid.

They have no trouble calling Biden "old". Where is the trouble with pointing out that Trump is a pussy-grabbing fraudulent dumbass with no redeeming qualities? Because that would be the very sad truth of it.

And he may have bought a gun and regularly threatens violence. Maybe it would be entirely right for the court to put him in a place where we all feel safer about him. Like a situation where he can stop lying and threatening people.  Things candidates for office um--just don't normally do.

Marjorie Taylor Greene is Just Dumb, You Guys

Um, no?

There weren't governments that melted the ice. The ice age and global warming are different things. One was a totally natural event and the other is understood to be "anthropogenic"--we are doing it. The global temperature noticeably jumped after the industrial age. We got the "gift of fire" to survive the ice age, but we turned it into coal-burning and oil-burning engines of CO2 production. The ice age ended on its own in the younger Dryas period. There are competing theories about what stimulated the interglacial period, but we don't have much to go on beyond polar core samples or whatever about stuff that long ago--

But about recent history of climate--we've got tons of data. What do you want--beyond, like, the hockey stick

So, just to cut up dumb Marge for posterity, she believes that GOD sent the rains to Burning Man, but they are also being brainwashed to believe it was global warming. So, God sent a weather portent to teach a lesson, but actually not teach people anything at all, because He should have known about the climate science fuckery ahead of time, bein' God and all.  He could have probably left shit alone in that case. Or maybe did science harder. I dunno. Not my circus and the simians in MTG's brain sure as heck ain't my monkeys. But what she's saying doesn't just make her look dumb, she's implying God is dumb, too.

But what I will note for posterity is: she does not make any sense at all. Maybe, and this isn't the first time I noticed it, she's just dumb as hell. She doesn't know shit and can't be taught. My word. Just uncapable to do congressional stuff at all.

Your Moment of WTF, With RFK Jr.

I'm beginning to wonder if he isn't anti-vaxx because he also doesn't understand germ theory.

UPDATE: Viruses are our friends

UPDATE: The reason I'm a little hyper-focused on a probably-unwell man with obvious crackpot fragments embedded in the middens that are his mind, is because there are people who become enamored by charisma and backstory. I'm sure he's sunk by now. You're probably certain he's sunk by now.

And yet obviously unwell and not terribly bright people with the benefit of fame, money, and the strategic backing of terrible people often prosper well ahead of expectations. It's not enough for me to think he's sinking, you understand. It's also about the ideas he's been put out there to promote. Skepticism of the government and the concept of expertise. The disgraceful anti-vax absurdity that threatens to bring diseases thought virtually eradicated back into play. And his support of bitcoin as a backing for the dollar

How do you back the dollar with nothing, let alone a nothing that is created by many, many acres of rainforest's worth of burnt carbon fuels--and still be called remotely environmentalist?  It is not itself obviously at this point in the game even a stable currency. And only a fool or a major Bitcoin investor could think otherwise or oh.  Maybe a bit of both

I want the feedback energy on his epic fail to reverb back on all the bullshit he's on about and cut it back to stumps. Right back to the RW ops who tried to send him this way.

"A Malignant Clownshow"

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries made the exact correct assessment of today's assault on truth by calling it "a malignant clown show". Exactly--a notorious crank was invited to speak by Republicans to pretend that censorship was a problem, and my word. This man is a bristling waste of time and attention. The House GOP decided to give a virulent (literally!) dope a platform to just lie on, rather vividly demonstrating why not all people deserve a platform. If RFK, Jr. was not a scion of a famous Democratic political dynasty, he'd be more obviously understood to be a crank, but OH MAN! he really still is, by Democrats.

It's Republicans who really want to hear the man talk about why vaccines are exactly like the Holocaust. They don't see why that is a problem for them.

Now, RFK JR. seems to recognize that the things he has said are problematic, because when confronted with them, he pretends he never said such things. He denies making anti-Semitic statements. He's the whole hell on video more than once being anti-Semitic at this point. He denies being anti-vax despite um, all the evidence of his being anti-vax

Rep. Stacey Plasket explained that the GOP have a motive in allowing disinformation to spread. Rep. Gerry Connolly called RFK basically a pro-GOP op to his face. Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz threw his own words back in his face, and man, he did not like that.

He even went on FOX News to cry about how his words, by being quoted to him verbatim, were twisted to make him the asshole. As if he never heard himself before.

All his testimony demonstrated was that he resonated more with Republicans than Democrats, and the things he said kind of demonstrated the problem isn't censorship--it's platforming. Do you platform any old weirdo for whatever reason? Does it matter that they are a part of a political dynasty or whatever?

No. Obviously no. The House GOP were trying to troll Democrats by putting this whole ass fool on, and I do not think it worked for them at all. He demonstrated why fools are only good for fooling, but can't be taken seriously.

I am unsurprised that the GOP did not understand that going in.

RFK Jr. and the Interesting Answer (F*cktons of UPDATES)

So much for the "He's not anti-vaxx" argument. It's a case of automated rolling goalposts. An argument like "Oh, I just think they all need to be tested against a placebo" sounds great, unless you realize most are. Double-blind tests against a control are pretty standard. But when our guy claims that vaccine research led to AIDS and the Spanish Flu. we're in bark at the moon territory.

Some might say it's not news that RFK Jr. has been promoted by Steve Bannon, but it is important to know he's backed with MAGA money.  Again, folks--this is a ratfuck, and for some reason, the MAGAs have decided RFK Jr. is their chosen tin-foil wrapped rodent dildo.

But is the rodent dildo made of cream cheese? See, when he decides to speak with the Liberty Mommies, that's sketchy as all hell. For Democrats.

But what I want to know is, does Donald Trump have the stones to debate him? I mean, if the Democrats are sure not to back RFK Jr. because he's got the wrong opinions on Ukraine and Russia, science* in general, etc.--maybe he could seek acceptance elsewhere?

Things You See on Twitter About Foreign Policy

I just screen capped a thing you can click to embiggen, which is pretty much the state of the stupid horseshoe fringe--Ann Coulter re-tweeting Max Blumenthal fluffing RFK Jr. because he's excoriating US policy supporting Ukraine's self-defense against the Russian invasion, because of course Kennedy is wrong because he's full of himself and of course Blumenthal is a useful idiot who spouts Russian propaganda anymore and Ann Coulter is, and always has been, an utter bitch.

I used to wonder what happened to Max Blumenthal. Did he experience a conversion experience because he wanted in Rania Khalek's pants or WTF? I used to speculate. How do you hate Israel apartheid and also think maybe Bashar Al-Assad is misunderstood? He was a good journalist for a whole minute. But look at Robert F. Kennedy Jr. He used to be a credible-ish environmentalist. Now he's an anti-science crackpot who sucks up to the dictators of petrostates and basically has the worst opinions in existence.

RFK Jr. talks in front of cultists who think maybe his cousin JFK Jr, is a five o'clock shadow dipshit with a porkpie hat who has no resemblance other than white and brown haired. This does not seem to faze him.

I have never wondered what happened to Ann Coulter. Oh, no. I never, ever, ever have. She's her own thing, all daddy issues and GOP manly hero-worship aside. If she has a Putin fetish I would not wonder at it for a second.

Anyway, Ann Coulter, Max Blumenthal, and RFK, Jr, and for what it's worth Dennis Kucinich, can all go autocopulate until they are desperately chafed. Their weird fringe "bold" controversial, contrarian opinions are only relevant to their wankery, not to anything happening in the actual world we live in, where Russia is trying to commit genocide and Ukraine is fighting against that because of course they are, and being a democratic nation that has some kind of morals, the US should oppose that.

People who don't understand that basic calculus flunk my tolerance right now. If you don't know Russia is the bad guy and more than diplomacy is required (like making Russia bleed because bullies only know that language) you are wasting our time with wishful thinking. There is no negotiation that is not some degree of surrender, and a pass for future violence.  Fuck off Tinkerbells. Ask not for who I clap, it is not the entire fuck for you. Who have shitty opinions with no stake at all, at all.

The Denialism Vortex

Just to refrain from linking to any of the stupid Twitter comments that got me to thinking about the denialism problem, I'm just going to link to Josh Marshall on the latest dumb thing the MAGA folks are doing: denying that the Ukraine war...is real.  Like somehow, Ukraine has snowed us all into thinking there's a war, and Russia is even playing along with this, and all of Europe and the US, etc. are somehow just pretending there's a war?

As if Wag the Dog were a documentary? It just doesn't seem plausible to me that this is being posited by anyone in good faith, but I don't think denialism is about that--although some people will buy it. It's about the debate. Exhausting, proof-pulling, stupid debate.

Think about how from stupid little acorns of bad faith, mighty conspiracist oaks grow--like with Andrew Wakefield's bad science that grew into the anti-vaxx movement that has since spawned actual terrorism threats.  Or people who can't accept any demonstration that the voter fraud that has them so furious never existed. Or think about climate science denialism and how people want to believe it's all a hoax started by people who want you to sit in a freezing room and eat bugs. (No, that's Brexit, dear....) And this "fake Ukraine War" canard seems like an outcropping of Russiagate--the denialism that Putin is a really bad guy who fucks with elections and has imperialist aims.

Climate Sunday: The Die-Off Horror Show

We have a problem in the sea with our crustaceans.  It isn't a local thing--it is happening elsewhere as well.  I've long worried that the worst of the current extinction event would focus on the sea, because land-based humans don't understand the seriousness of the nautical ecosystem to their existence.

But it is real, and necessary. And parts of our necessary aquaculture are dying

A lot of this is about dumping waste into the ecosystem. And this is something we could easily stop doing. But we are in an extinction event currently we didn"t even plan to be in,  and have only so many ways to sort ourselves out of. I am 50 years old and know that half the world's species have stopped being viable in my lifetime.

We need to become more mindful custodians of the planet we live on. I don't think we can survive any other way.

Monkeypox is Not an STI You Assholes!

The premise is wrong.  The conceit of the story is working backwards from the demographic that the disease appeared in to make judgement values about how the disease spreads. This is irresponsible. Monkeypox is related to smallpox. and smallpox was extremely bad. And FYI, although smallpox is basically eradicated, it's because of vaccinations that were stopped for many Gen X and future generations.

That's right Millennials and Gen Z--the PTB (Powers that be) knew smallpox might still be a thing (weaponized by terrorists, existing in unvaccinated pockets around the world) that might eventually come back to bite our asses. Or at least they should have understood a variant thereof would--see, all of epidemiology is variants--literal proofs of evolution, happening all the time. But we are vulnerable because we were told the disease was eradicated, because it might have existed still, but in places too remote and fucked up for us to consider.

OK, Carlson, You Got Me

Is this not a recipe for man-parts melanoma? (or other calamity I asked myself, agape and aghast at the genital microwaving (this link is cursed) I saw displayed. I mean, dudes looking to procreate wear loose boxers and try to give their boys air if they are having some difficulties, so treating your hotdog to the convenience store lamp treatment in order to boost vitamin "D" seems entirely counterintuitive (read: stupid as fuck). Frankly, the best things you can do to boost test (non-pharma) are get good sleep, eat good food, move your ass, and don't be stressed out as all fuck. You know what else boosts test? Winning at actual stuff, instead of being the kind of guy who obsesses over whether you are manly or not.

Gronk gets it. Beckham does, too. You are more than the sum of your hormones or social drag.

I am not going to ask myself if the intro cut was homoerotic, because worrying about that is far more the Dan White Society's president's problem than mine. And I find I do not care what Pee Wee Better in the Original German thinks about gender stuff, since he once described beating up a gay person in a men's room, and it sort became a thing conservatives worry about in bathrooms now, and want to persecute non-gender conforming people about in public restrooms because ack!--weird when people need to pee, right? Because maybe sex stuff? (Actually, not really. It just gets talked about.)

This man is so insecure he needs a passcode to grab his own dick in the john. This man is so insecure he supports pedophilia so long as it's the straight, very religiously-perversely-defended kind. (And women who own their own sexuality are whores. That's another extremely insecure thing.)

So yes, I find I need to mock Carlson because wow, this thing was so needy and so totally about his own toxic masculine gender conflict, but it feels like he totally laid it out as bait so gender-wise hipsters would skewer him and martyr his poor UV rayed in effigy man-bits with opprobrium that he could then point to the mean-ass libs as the witches who were stealing his penis?

Shut up you guys, I'm just a feminist asking questions.  And yes, I did the cock-robbin'. In the rest room with the lead pipe, And I would do it again!

TWGB: It's Raining Shoes!

It certainly has been a minute, hasn't it? So, what brings me out of self-imposed blogging exile, if not something very relevant to my...
