Deep in the Dark Heart of Texas

I could just blog about how TX Gov.  Greg Abbott is a signifying sociopathic fascist who is pardoning a racist and pedophile murderer to send a chilling message to his state about his values, but I need to point out that he is not just following through on a political promise, but that the Texas Pardon and Parole Board recommended it.

Let me repeat that: this was not without the consent of other people who sit in judgment over who gets pardons or parole, but with their express approval. Greg Abbott isn't a brand-new baby governor trying to feel out the ethos of his state--he is a monster who has figured out that many people will clap for a particular kind of monster.

In Texas, anyway.

He isn't better than the lynch mob, he sells rope. Sometimes he even comps it. He is the kind of guy who looks at the Hollywood trope of a gunslinger who shoots the feet of some somuvabitch and makes them dance, and wishes it was him, instead of understanding this is how cinema depicts wanton evil.

But he is not alone (just look at granny-killer Patrick and dead-eye Paxton). They all come off to me like some kind of fucked-up throwbacks and while I can absorb the idea that Texas is supposed to be not so much a red state as a non-voting state, what the hell does it take to want to not have monsters running the show?

That's rhetorical, by the way. I wish Democrats down there all the best, but weeping Jesus I know I deride Trump for claiming everything is rigged, but Republicans truly must have shit rigged tight down there.

Is this the looniest thing: the fact that the murderer (pardon notwithstanding, is and will always be a murderer) has had his "gun rights" restored?
