This amazing picture is Bree Newsome, an activist and artist, taking down the Confederate flag in South Carolina. It wasn't coming down fast enough, and was still flying while the Emanuel Nine were lying...
Of course it went back up. After all, there was a pro-flag rally planned, and you know things have to be ready when company is coming.

Especially when the company includes members of the KKK, who are part of the pro-confederate flag rally that happened afterwards. Some people are just determined to stay mired in the past.
Pro-Confederate flag rallies also happened in Florida and Alabama. I'm percolating a post about this; I think about what Faulkner said about the past not ever being over, and Santayana regarding the fate of those who forget history. Those people protesting in favor of that flag today (and whenever and wherever) have been permitted a terrible forgetting, and carry out their own perpetuation of a vast and difficult history blindly. Respect it? No. They inadvertently disrespect it by not calling it what it was. And they dishonor the pretense that things have changed by not looking at the damage they do. (Except for the honest racists--at least those fuckers aim to do harm and admit it, instead of romanticizing the shit out of it.)
