Not a "Failure to Communicate"

I can't help but think some blogs are getting this story a bit wrong. There definitely is a story here, in that I do tend to believe that Rep. Broun is using taxpayer dollars to help him with his campaigning, and that certainly is a no-no. But even though it is a sincere joy to recount the catalog of craziness that is the public body of Paul Broun's commentary--his failure to communicate to the unconverted is only a perceived failure to the intellectual class of the Liberal Republic of Logickistan. You don't go around disavowing all of your education in front of a mess of disembodied deer heads merely because you are a believer in the crazy--it is because you are signifying belonging. He articulates an anti-science, pro-gun, pro-theocracy point of view very articulately. And by gum, it is working.

No, I don't like this any more than you.  But there are some men you actually can reach by talking the way he does, and those are the people he figures are voting for him. That's the way he wants it--and he gets it.

So there you go.

I'm reminded of Paul Ryan regretting how he was "inarticulate" when he clearly said exactly what he meant and communicated it very well.

Dr. Google reminds us, virtually without prompting, that Broun's debate coach, Brett O'Donnell, was Michele Bachmann's Svengali in the 2012 campaign, memorably described in Buzzfeed http://www.buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczynski/former-aide-michelle-bachmann-had-unnatural-rela:

“He prohibited her husband, Dr. Marcus Bachmann, from sleeping in the same room with wife while on the campaign trail,” Waldron said in an email to BuzzFeed. “He prohibited legendary consultants Ed Rollins and Ed Goeas from attending debate prep sessions. He told her when she could get off the bus (Waterloo event with Gov. Perry), he wrote most of the words that came out of her mouth, he wrote all of her speeches.”

Seems pretty clear that what he's doing with Broun must be approximately the same, and very effective, getting this clown nationally noticed.
