We have a very personable and accomplished nominee for US Surgeon General in Dr. Vivek Murthy, if the right wing could possibly entertain the sensibility of his one great sacrilege:
The good doctor seems to be under the irremediable disposition to suppose that guns, particularly the ones that can shoot bullets at people--are very bad for human health. True story. I am not sure where he may have accomplished this point of view, except to say that emergency room doctors run into anecdotal evidence all the time that bullets penetrating human flesh is actually bad news and have done so for quite a long time, It is even supposed that people use guns specifically because of their harmful impact on human health.
The people who do this aren't even generally supposed to be our very best and brightest or most well-behaved humans. Lots of human deaths by guns occur due to sheer stupidity or failure to think. So it may well be that our doctor-candidate isn't even dissing the potential man killing tool we call the gun, but is just decrying the actual particularly stupid use of the same. Much as one would not decry cars just because of all the car accidents.
Therefore, it seems to me that the posture of some senatorial jokesters against Dr. Murthy's eligibility for this office has a lot to do with signifying about gun ownership in a knee-jerk fashion, without fully considering whether his opposing point is at least sensible and valid. And I would say it at least is. And I don't think I would be weird to find this. I think it's weirder not to.
In this instance, it might be really neat if Democrats caught a clue and acted like Democrats for this one.
