The Constitution isn't the Boss of North Carolina Republicans!

So, I could make a lengthier post about this one, but I prefer looking at it as something of a zen meditation:

A bill filed by Republican lawmakers would allow North Carolina to declare an official religion, in violation of the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Bill of Rights, and seeks to nullify any federal ruling against Christian prayer by public bodies statewide.
...(snip)
House Bill 494, filed by Republican Rowan County Reps. Harry Warren and Carl Ford, would refuse to acknowledge the force of any judicial ruling on prayer in North Carolina – or indeed on any Constitutional topic:
"The Constitution of the United States does not grant the federal government and does not grant the federal courts the power to determine what is or is not constitutional; therefore, by virtue of the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, the power to determine constitutionality and the proper interpretation and proper application of the Constitution is reserved to the states and to the people," the bill states. "Each state in the union is sovereign and may independently determine how that state may make laws respecting an establishment of religion."
The Constitution does not determine what is constitutional. They are establishing a religion because the First Amendment says they shouldn't, is why. The sound of one face palming.

Ya know, I almost hope this occurs, and causes a rift between different denominations. Let the Southern Baptists and the Methodists duke it out over who gets the spoils.

If things go their way, the sectarianism is going to end up in an "Iraq style" boodoggle.

Don't they realize that this is just the first step to imposing Shania Law?

When they start the Church of Jesus Christ of North Carolina, can I be archbishop of Durham?

Well it wouldn't be so bad if they picked a 'bun' religion like Bokononism or rastafarianism....but Christianity is so droll and, besides, it has been done already. I worship at the Church of the Holy Mother of Occasional Help. I like an apathetic Goddess.

I have definite Erisian tendencies myself--All Hail Discordia! Although I'm indifferent about when I eat hotdog buns.

I'll just mention as an update--although the speaker of NC's House put the kibosh on the resolution, they are also planning on saving marriage from itself by putting a mandatory delay on divorces. Hmm. Small government!

Erisian...new to me. I checked it out, a little, but it does seem like something to explore....but only after a long nap.
