It all started when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized Russia's parliamentary election process.
But McCain took it a step further -- taking shots at Putin, alluding to massive anti-Putin protests in Russia.
McCain admits he picked a fight with the embattled prime minister.
He tweeted last week, "Dear Vlad, #The ArabSpring is coming to a neighborhood near you."

"I just think it's a little strange," says McCain, "that, obviously, the leader of one of the world's largest and most powerful countries would worry about what John McCain has to say. I have a pretty high opinion of myself, but not quite that level!"
John McCain is a US Senator. He campaigned for the highest executive office of the US. And he does not understand why beefin' on Twitter with the Prime Minister of Russia is foolish. I'm just a polisnark blogger who calls people douchebags and 'Shops comical pictures of them, and even I see all kinds of problems with the very phrase "beefin' on Twitter with the Prime Minister of Russia." Just randomly, the history between the US and Russia, current relations between the US and Russia, the fact that McCain isn't president, but nonetheless is an elected official, and so on. It's indecorous and unhelpful, and....
The problem isn't McCain's high opinion of himself, it's his failure, actually, to appreciate that he is a US Senator....beefin' on Twitter with the ....
