Montazeri and Iranian Democracy

I have been delinquent in posting regarding the Iranian "Green Revolution". This Sunday, a cleric who often voiced the concerns of the opposition, Grand Ayatollah Montazeri, who was 87, passed on. Following the Iranian opposition to the Ahmedinejad regime puts me in the odd place of trying to grasp a movement that actually is both democratic and Islamic, and in which there isn't a separation of church and state. To me, the idea of the wall between church and state is, if you'll forgive me, sacred. And of course, I am a respecter of persons, not religions. And yet, I respect the person that the Grand Ayatollah was, because of the conclusions that he came to regarding democracy and human rights. I think his heart was in the right place.

In other news, opposition leader Mir-Hussein Mousavi was sacked from his position as head of the Academy of Arts in Iran-tell me that's not political! Also, the government has recently vowed to crack down upon the resurgence of protests for the opposition.

I can't help but be on the side of the people against this government that doesn't respect their rights.
