The step-father now admits he was trying to kill the kid to spite the mother of the child. This is very sick--if he didn't love or even like her, the thing to do is--LEAVE!
Sick as it is, it makes more sense than the stupid business with trances and weird rituals. But what did that poor baby ever do to them but be born to someone they had something against? And why the "Candomble" alibi--like that would have made the case against them better somehow? And why needles slowly inserted after drugging over time? Certainly, anyone could think of a dozen easier, more certain, and less painful ways to kill a toddler, not that this is anything I do regularly, myself.
I feel like there must be another weird layer to this story, that's all. It's altogether too bizarre. I only hope that the boy's surgeries all turn out well. And I really expect bad things for the step-father and his girlfriend--what creeps!
