"Men Who Stare at Goats"--review, somewhat.
To be completely honest, I loved this movie from the trailer and the cast and the concept all by themselves, without the movie--as executed--being actually a marvellously funny and thoughtful meditation upon war and its warriors, upon spirituality and silliness, upon the search for meaning and actually, kind of finding it, quixote-ishly, anyhow, with a journalist in tow and a belief in your own government-sponsored super-powers.
This trailer is completely insufficient. The movie, however, is not. Spacey is the snarky and unlikeable villian (oh, but I like Kevin Spacey.) Ewan McGregor is the naif, a Jedi-wannabe, led by Clooney, who is kind of the Quixote-like hero. Jeff Bridges is like, totally abiding as a Dude and a Soldier, as the Guru of the New Earth Army--the new age warriors who want to fight wars with peace, love, understanding, and totally killing shit with brainwaves.
This movie intersperses laughs with reality. It has themes of redemption and the search for meaning. But also there are very serious moments that speak to the idea that war isn't natural, that people fuck up, and that people can choose to be heroes, or just suck out loud.
This is a seriously good movie. I totally recommend it.
