Kim Newman's Secret Files of the Diogenes Club is a damn nifty read--a swell follow-up to The Man from the Diogenes Club. Well, let's be honest--
I suppose I'd have read *any* follow-up--the novel fun of Britain's most-secret service as glimpsed in TMFTDC and the Anno Dracula books only make Newman's readers wonder a little about the long and strange history of The Diogenes Club--this collection delivers. Color me a little biased: give me obscure references, historical atmosphere, references to Lovecraftian Great Old Ones, colorful, tight, clever writing, I'll probably like it. So I really liked this. A plus--a thread runs through this collection, as the anchor character seems to be one Catriona Kaye, century baby, best girl of Edwin Winthrop (whose early exploits are found in Bloody Red Baron), one of the first ladies of the Diogenes Club and the lady in charge by the spooky 70's.
You don't have to have read the Anno Dracula novels, or even The Man from the Diogenes Club to like this set, though. (It does lend to one's enjoyment, though.) I recommend it--and look forward to more.
